DJ Premier (* 21st March 1966 in Houston , Texas ; bourgeois Christopher Edward Martin ), also Preemo is an American hip-hop - DJ and producer . He is considered one of the most influential and important producers of hip hop on the American east coast .

biography

After the unsuccessful attempt to get a record deal with his old group ICP , the premier from Houston , Texas (then known as Waxmaster C ) got to know the MC Guru in 1988 through the joint label Wildpitch Records . The two decided to move to Brooklyn and formed the successful hip-hop duo Gang Starr .

DJ Premier initially produced exclusively for his own group, but his distinctive style soon earned him considerable respect in the scene. He eventually became one of the most sought-after producers of underground hip-hop of the 1990s , working with artists such as Group Home , Jay-Z , Jeru The Damaja , KRS-One , MOP , Afu-Ra , Nas , Notorious BIG , Mos Def , GZA , Talib Kweli or Rakim together.

In his productions often used Premier Jazz - but also radio - and Soul - samples , giving them initially to print jazz rap lent, which he himself never took. He also uses DJ techniques such as scratching and processes earlier works by an artist into a refrain.

Although Premier is best known for his work as a producer, he sees himself primarily as a DJ. His claim to be among the best in his field and always to show the direction is derived from his name.

In 2002 DJ Premier founded the Year Round Records label and in 2004 bought the New York D&D Studios , where he only recorded until they closed the year before. In 2006 he recorded some pieces for her album Back to Basics with Christina Aguilera . In 2011 he recorded a track with Bushido for his album Jenseits von Gut und Böse .

In 2014 DJ Premier released the album PRhyme , recorded with Royce da 5'9 ", under the label of the same name, which was founded especially for this purpose.

In 2018 DJ Premier released the album PRhyme 2 , recorded with Royce da 5′9 ″ .
