Gang Starr's Guru in Hamburg 1999

Gang Starr was an American hip-hop duo made up of rapper Guru and DJ and producer DJ Premier .

Career

The group was founded in 1986. At that time it consisted of various other members besides Guru. It only really made its mark, however, when DJ Premier joined them in 1989 and the two released the single Words I Manifesto and the album No More Mr Nice Guy together . Her next work, Step In The Arena , became a classic. The following two albums, Daily Operation and Hard To Earn, helped to consolidate their status as one of the most influential hip-hop groups ever. Their fifth LP Moment of Truth was the duo's most commercially successful studio album, and in 1998 the work was awarded gold by the RIAA with over 500,000 units sold in the USA . This was then also achieved with the album Full Clip . Gang Starr also helped found jazz rap with the piece Jazz Thing from the soundtrack to Spike Lee's film Mo 'Better Blues .

After their last album, The Ownerz , the two temporarily separated and began to work on their solo projects. The guru, suffering from cancer, died on April 19, 2010 as a result of a heart attack after falling into a coma in February of that year.

In September 2019, DJ Premier surprisingly announced a new album by the duo. This will feature previously unpublished recordings by Guru . With Family and Loyalty (feat. J. Cole ) a first piece was published. In addition to artists from the environment of the former Gang Starr Foundation such as Jeru The Damaja , MOP and Group Home , guest appearances by Q-Tip and Talib Kweli can be heard on the 16 songs .
