Q-Tip (born April 10, 1970 in Harlem , New York ; real name Jonathan Davis ), also known under the stage name Abstract and under the name Kamaal Ibn John Fareed , which has changed since his conversion to Islam , is a founding member and MC of the globally successful Hip -Hop formation A Tribe Called Quest . Q-Tip is currently under contract with GOOD Music , the label of the US rapper Kanye West .

biography

Q-Tip is considered to be very introverted and reserved. Accordingly, little is known about his private life. Since the dissolution of A Tribe Called Quest in 1998 he has been working as a solo artist and music producer . His nasal voice is very easy to recognize. Q-Tip is considered to be one of the first rappers to consciously avoid the common clichés of gangsta rap .

His musical career includes many collaborations with well-known artists such as Andy Summers , Beastie Boys , Black Sheep , DJ Shadow , Janet Jackson , Jungle Brothers , Mark Ronson , Prince , REM , Sergio Mendes and The Chemical Brothers . He produced Nas ' One Love and Mobb Deeps Drink Away the Pain (Situations) , among others .

At the end of February 2007, Q-Tip called for an online petition to be signed in order to be able to independently publish the album Kamaal the Abstract , which had already been announced for 2002 . It finally appeared in September 2009.

After the rapper to the already 2006 Grammy winner Galvanize the Chemical Brothers in the category Dance had been involved, his own album was The Renaissance at the Grammy Awards in 2010 for Best Rap Album nomination.
