Black Sheep is an American hip-hop duo consisting of Andres "Dres" Titus and William "Mista Lawnge" McLean.
history
The two New Yorkers, who originally grew up in North Carolina , were hip-hop fans as early as the mid- 1980s . Dres worked as an MC , Mista Lawnge as a DJ . To get a record deal, Lawnge moved to New York , where he got in touch with Mike Gee of the Jungle Brothers through DJ Red Alert . Gee's connection to the Native Tongue Family inspired Lawnge to form Black Sheep and sign Dres as an MC.
Black Sheep's first release, Flavor of the Month , was one of the most successful rap singles of 1991. The contact with bands of the Native Tongues Posse such as B. De La Soul or A Tribe Called Quest also brought Black Sheep success. Her debut album A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing (1991) hit number 30 on the album charts and her next single, "The Choice Is Yours", became an MTV hit. The album eventually sold around 1 million copies and the duo landed alongside other rap greats such as B. Main Source , Gang Starr , Kool G Rap and The Pharcyde on the rap sampler Heavies' Heavy Rhyme Experience Vol.1 .
The follow-up album Non-Fiction (1994), however, fell victim to poor promotion and was not nearly as successful as A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing . As a result, the duo broke up; both worked on different projects. Finally, Dres released his solo album Sure Shot Redemption (1999). In 1999, Fatman Scoop used a sample from The Choice Is Yours (Revisited) from the album A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing in his song Be Faithful . The following year, Fatboy Slim used a sample that appears in both songs The Choice Is Yours and The Choice Is Yours (Revisited) in his song Weapon of Choice .
Black Sheep finally teamed up again in 2000 to record a title for the soundtrack of the film With All Harshness (director: Laurence Fishburne ). They went on tour with Das EFX and released the new album 8WM / Novakane in 2006 .
