De La Soul is an American hip-hop - Trio , consisting of the rappers (* Kelvin Mercer on August 17 1969 ), David J. Jolicoeur (* 21st September 1968 ) and Vincent Mason (* 27. March 1970 ) is and was founded in 1987 in Amityville , New York .
history
Together with bands like A Tribe Called Quest and the Jungle Brothers , De La Soul formed the group of the Native Tongue Family in the late 1980s and early 1990s , a movement that dealt with social issues instead of the gangsta and ghetto lyrics that were common at the time set a friendlier image. It was called No School and / or Next School.
The three members have acquired several aliases : Kelvin Mercer bears the pseudonyms "Posdnuos", "Mercenary", "Plug Wonder Why" and "Plug One", David Jude Jolicœur "Trugoy the Dove", "Dave" and "Plug Two" , and Vincent Mason "Pasemaster Mase", "Maseo" and "Plug Three".
The music of her debut album Three Feet High and Rising , produced by Prince Paul , was characterized by samples from jazz ( jazz-rap ), rock and even country , playing with a hippie aesthetic and a sometimes very peculiar humor. For example, the title of the record was borrowed from a song by Johnny Cash . The released single Me, Myself and I became a worldwide hit.
Later the band separated from Prince Paul and either produced themselves or worked with changing producers (including J Dilla ), which was reflected in the much more common instrumentals. Nonetheless, each album was a commercial success that influenced the alternative hip-hop scene .
The 2016 album and the Anonymous Nobody ... was financed by the band through Kickstarter.com . In 2019, Kelvin Mercer, David J. Jolicœur and Vincent Mason announced that after a long dispute with their label they are now legally in a position to offer their recordings on streaming platforms. De La Soul state that they didn't feel well represented by the label.
