Queen Latifah (* 18th March 1970 in Newark , New Jersey ; bourgeois Dana Elaine Owens ) is an American hip-hop - musician , actress and talk show - presenter . She was nominated for an Oscar for the film Chicago . In 2008 she was also able to win the Golden Globe .

life and career

Her debut album All Hail the Queen (1989) was a huge success and received a Grammy nomination for best rap performance. In the summer of 1991, the single Fly Girl hit the UK charts. Even if only placed in the lower regions, it was their most successful title.

In 1993 she founded her own record company: Flavor Unit Records. On her record Dana Owens Album (2004) she turns to jazz . This album contains largely sixties- style arrangements , including an adaptation of the folk classic California Dreaming by The Mamas and the Papas .

Her first film role was in 1991 in Jungle Fever directed by Spike Lee . From 1993 to 1998 she starred in the sitcom Living single . For her role in the musical Chicago (2002) she was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actress. In 2003 she starred in the comedy House Overhead with Steve Martin . In 2004 she directed the action comedy New York Taxi .

She published an autobiography entitled Ladies first: revelations of a strong woman in 1999. In January 2006, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . This makes Queen Latifah the first hip-hop artist to receive this honor.

In Ice Age 2 - Now thaws , Ice Age 3 - The dinosaurs are on the loose and Ice Age 4 - Fully shifted in the original English version, she gave her voice to the mammoth female Ellie .

She also took part in the funeral service of Michael Jackson on July 7, 2009 and gave a farewell speech, where she read the poem We had him by the poet Maya Angelou .

Latifah runs the Flavor Unit Studios production company in Miami together with Shakim Compere . Since September 2013 she has hosted the daily Queen Latifah Show . It continues a series that ran successfully from 1999 to 2001.
