Hollywood is an American miniseries that was released on May 1, 2020 on the video-on-demand provider Netflix . The idea for the series comes from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan , who already came up with the productions Glee , Scream Queens and The Politician . It is about several people who want to make a career in Hollywood after the Second World War and not only have to overcome challenges due to their origins or sexuality, but also meet (real) greats in the industry. The series pays homage to classic Hollywood and takes artistic liberties in its dramaturgy with regard to historical events and people. A first trailer was released on April 20, 2020.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , some dubbed versions could not be completed when it was released, which means that the series was only available in the original version with subtitles in many countries . At the end of May 2020, the episodes were finally published in the German version.

action

The series focuses on several people who want to become known in Hollywood's "golden era" in the 1940s. These include the director Raymond Ainsley, the actor and war veteran Jack Castello, the screenwriter Archie Coleman, the actress Camille Washington, who is also Raymond's partner, and the actress Claire Wood, the daughter of Ace Amberg, one of the powerful Film studios in the studio system belongs. In doing so, they are confronted with several problems, the Afro-American Archie and Camille are exposed to racist hostility, which is why the film project written by Archie and directed by Raymond with Camille and Jack in the leading roles threatens to fail. Raymond is half- Filipino , but unlike most other Asian Americans, all doors in the film industry are open to him because of his white appearance .

In addition to sexism , homophobia is omnipresent in the supposed dream factory, which is why Ernie West's gas station, where Archie and Jack initially work, is a popular meeting place for secret heterosexual and homosexual sex meetings, which also occur through sexual intercourse with people like Avis, the wife of Ace, can be a career springboard. A frequent customer of the gas station is actor Rock Hudson , whose homosexuality is an open secret in the industry and whom Archie falls in love with. Other real people in the storyline are agent Henry Willson , whose idiosyncrasies Raymond has to contend with, the first African-American Oscar winner Hattie McDaniel , who gives Camille advice, Anna May Wong , who is the first Sino-American film star in the United States is Eleanor Roosevelt , who is friends with Avis, the actors Tallulah Bankhead , Tab Hunter and Vivien Leigh , the director George Cukor and the writer Noël Coward .

production

After moving from his regular channel FX to Netflix in February 2018, Ryan Murphy was hired to create several new series and films. On February 22, 2019, Murphy announced that Netflix had ordered a season for its Hollywood series , which he was developing with Ian Brennan , who has worked with many times in the past. According to Murphy, the miniseries is a love letter to the dream factory. Hollywood is the second production of the streaming service after The Politician , which arose from the deal with Murphy.

In addition to Murphy and Brennan, the series is financed by Janet Mock , who is also a producer on Murphy's Pose series . Other executive producers are the lead actors Darren Criss and David Corenswet . Criss has worked with Murphy on Glee and American Horror Story , and Corenswet can be seen in The Politician .

On September 3, 2019, in addition to Criss and Corenswet, the cast of several leading roles with Patti LuPone , Holland Taylor , Jeremy Pope , Jim Parsons , and Joe Mantello was announced. It was also announced that Dylan McDermott will star in the series and his role is based freely on Scotty Bowers . With the exception of Taylor and Pope, the participants could be seen before Hollywood in productions that were conceived or directed by Murphy. Corenswet and McDermott stood together for The Politician , Parsons and Mantello for The Normal Heart . LuPone and McDermott also played in American Horror Story , but not in the same seasons, LuPone was also cast in a recurring supporting role in the second season of Pose .

After the Second World War, the young veteran Jack Castello and his wife Henrietta moved to Los Angeles, where he wanted to pursue a career as an actor in Hollywood. However, Jack doesn't even get roles as an extra , which causes problems for Henrietta, because she is pregnant, doesn't earn a lot as a waitress and wants to buy a house. In a bar, Jack meets Ernie West, who offers him a job in his gas station, which Jack accepts. There it turns out that the employees can provide sexual services to customers for bonus payments, which Jack eventually does, but quits when Ernie tries to force him to become intimate with a man. When Henrietta tells him that he is expecting twins, Jack asks Ernie to be allowed to work for him again. For the service to male customers, he presents Archie Coleman, an African American who also prostitutes himself because he is unsuccessful as a screenwriter. Both are hired by Ernie. Archie has sex with young actor Roy Fitzgerald on his first day. After having sex with a casting director, Jack receives an offer for his first audition. At the end of the episode, he is arrested when a supposed customer turns out to be an undercover agent.

After Ernie pays his bail, Jack is released from prison and has sex with Avis Amberg, whose husband Ace owns the studio where Jack's audition takes place. Since she is highly satisfied with his services, Avis promises to make sure that the casting goes well. Meanwhile, up-and-coming director Raymond Ainsley asks Anna May Wong , a Sino-American actress who is depressed because of the Hays Code , that she receives only stereotypical role offers to play the main character in his first film. During a meeting with the producer Dick Samuels, the latter warns Raymond in vain not to sign Wong. Jack does a very bad job in the studio, but thanks to the influence of producer and acting mentor Ellen Kincaid, Dick is persuaded to sign him. For Raymond's African-American friend, Camille Washington, things are not going so well since she is only given roles as maid. Dick puts Raymond's planned project on hold, he is allowed to take a script from a pile and film it. His choice falls on Archie's script about a woman who committed suicide by jumping off the Hollywood Sign . Archie continues to have sex meetings with Roy, with the two falling in love. The latter is discovered by secretly homosexual agent Henry Willson , who wants to promote him and convinces him to change his name to Rock Hudson . Finally, Dick gives the go-ahead for Raymond and Archie's film, called Peg .

Ernie reveals to his employees that they are invited to a select Hollywood party hosted by director George Cukor . On this they should fulfill the sexual wishes of the guests. Meanwhile, Jack would like to play the male lead in Peg , but Archie envisions Rock as the ideal cast who will render Henry sexual services so that he can keep him as an agent, which is why Henry invites Rock to Cukor's party. In the studio, Ellen prepares Jack for his audition for Peg , Ace and Avis' daughter Claire also receives an invitation to the casting, while Camille Raymond suggests changes to the script and asks him to cast her in the female lead. At the party, Jack, to his displeasure, is forced by Ernie to sexually satisfy guests, even if he didn't actually go to the party for this purpose. While Ernie takes care of Vivien Leigh , Rock becomes jealous when he learns Archie is sleeping with other men. Jack meets Henry, who agrees to replace him for oral sex . Because Jack refuses and leaves, Henry threatens to destroy his career. Rock and Dick want to sleep together, but instead decide to have an intimate conversation about their real personalities and the downsides of Hollywood. Dick advises Rock not to let Henry control him anymore, Rock gratefully accepts the advice. Raymond confesses his love for Camille and wants to cast her in the lead role in Peg , while Dick and Ellen agree to fight for Camille's commitment in the studio.

Ace approves Peg to begin filming , but is angry at Archie's scriptwriting because he doesn't want to see an African American in the position and demands that he be removed from production. Jack asks Archie to get him the lead role in Peg , which the latter refuses and claims that Jack could do it himself. Ace suffers a heart attack while sleeping with his affair, actress Jeanne Crandall, which is being kept under lock and key on Avis' orders. With Ace unable to continue his work, Dick and Avis are temporarily appointed studio directors. Dick tells Archie that he will no longer be part of the film, but Archie refuses to step off the production team, which Dick accepts, but warns Archie of possible consequences. Archie then visits Raymond and Camille, convincing them to audition for the lead role in Peg , since he is tired of being told what to do and what not to do by the white studio bosses. Camille gets into an argument with Raymond when he tells her not to put too much emotion into the role, but quickly makes up with him. On the day of the casting, Rock has trouble getting his lines right, but eventually performs well. Claire plays badly on purpose to give Camille a chance. Their auditions are also going great, with Avis struggling with the idea of an African American main character. Finally, Jack and Claire are cast in the leading roles, but Avis' friend Eleanor Roosevelt gives a fiery speech about why Camille would be better suited.
5 Jump! Jump Michael Uppendahl Ryan Murphy & Ian Brennan
Avis is still reluctant to hire Camille, but is finally persuaded by Dick and Ellen. Claire praises her mother and tells her that she made the right decision, after which Avis gives her another role. Raymond tells Archie that he will continue to be featured in the opening credits of the film, which has been renamed Meg . Rock learns from Archie that he can also be involved in the production, albeit not as the lead actor. Meanwhile, Camille is congratulated by her colleague, first African American Oscar winner Hattie McDaniel , for her success and warned of her upcoming battle with discrimination in society and Hollywood. This also occurs a little later when the studio is heavily criticized, especially by residents of the southern states , and Camille receives racist calls. Dick closely monitors production to ensure that the budget is not exceeded. The first reading sample also goes smoothly, later Raymond and Archie watch the first rough cuts with Dick, he can convince them to change the end scene so that the title character survives. The project threatens to fail, however, because a local tabloid magazine tries to publish an article about Jack's arrest for prostitution. Henry wants to take care of it, but claims to Jack that Jack now owes him something. Henry has the editor beaten up by Mafiosi, who then withdraws his article. For this, Henry is appointed Meg's producer by Avis . Meanwhile, Raymond is heavily criticized by Dick for going over budget for a re-shoot and is urged to finance the difference out of pocket. Then Ellen tries to seduce Dick, who rejects her advances and goes to a gay bar. Jack moves in with Archie when Henrietta tells him that not he, but her colleague Erwin Kaye, is the father of the twins, with whom she will also leave town.
6th Meg Meg Janet Mock Ian Brennan & Janet Mock & Reilly Smith
Those involved in Meg receive threatening letters from members of the Ku Klux Klan and other Suprematists . That's another reason Ace's lawyer Lon Silver wants to stop production, but Avis doesn't want to hear about it. While Jack and Henrietta apologize for their mutual mistakes in the failed relationship after their children are born in the hospital and rejoice for each other's happiness, Ernie collects money to pay off Raymond's surplus. Jack and Archie want to show themselves to Ernie for his help and offer him a role in the film, which he accepts. He also meets with Ellen, who gives him acting lessons. The shooting is finally finished, and the result is very well received by the entire film crew. Archie asks Rock if they want to move in together, which Rock says yes. Jack and Claire fell in love while filming and decided to attend the premiere together. Meanwhile, Ace wakes up from his coma and is advised not to publish Meg , but contrary to all expectations he is enthusiastic about the finished film. Dick threatens Ace to get out of the studio if he does n't release, and comes out to him. Henry is not entirely satisfied with the ending and suggests an additional scene in which Meg explains her motivation for her suicide attempt, which Raymond likes. Avis feels like she has no more control because she no longer runs the studio and fears that she will have to eke out a housewife. She demands to become co-president of the studio, which Ace agrees to do, thereby improving the long-term tense relationship between the spouses. However, Ace dies the next morning of the aftermath of his heart attack, which leaves Avis in deep mourning, Lon lets Meg burn the film role .

After Avis lets Lon fire, the editor confesses at Ace's funeral that he hid a copy of the tape and Meg is saved. The studio decides to release the film across the country as a couple of southern theaters agree to show it. Meanwhile, Ellen and Ernie sleep together, after which he confesses to her that he has terminal lung cancer , but this does not affect Ellen's love for him. Jack and Claire also become intimate and begin a relationship. Meg breaks all box office records and is considered a big favorite for the 1947 Academy Awards. McDaniel recommends Camille not to adhere to racial segregation in the event of a nomination , but to sit in the front row. Since McDaniel, contrary to her wishes, never got other roles, but only as a maid, Camille owes her this honor. On the day of the award, Rock and Archie have their personal coming-out as a couple on the red carpet, Henry insults Rock in this respect, which is why he is insulted by him and dismissed as an agent. In the hall, Camille is refused entry, she resists and takes a seat in the front row. Wong, Raymond, Archie and Camille received the award in the categories of Best Supporting Actress , Best Director , Best Screenplay and Best Actress , Meg was also crowned Best Film . Jack is not victorious, but still steps on the stage and proposes to Claire, which she accepts. A year later, now dry , Henry asks Rock for forgiveness for his past behavior. He cannot forgive him, but accepts his offer for the lead role in his planned project Dreamland , Hollywood's first production about a gay couple. A little later Dick dies of cancer, which is why Meg's entire production team pays his last respects. Avis clears the filming of Dreamland , which begins shortly afterwards at Ernie's gas station, starring Jack and Rock, based on a script by Raymonds directed by Archie.
