Fred Grandy
Frederick Lawrence "Fred" Grandy (born June 29, 1948 in Sioux City , Iowa ) is an American actor and politician .
Life
Fred Grandy attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1966 the Phillips Exeter Academy . This was followed by studies at Harvard University until 1970 . He then worked briefly for Congressman Wiley Mayne . Between 1971 and 1986 he was a well-known television actor in the United States. From 1976 to 1986, in the role of "Gopher Smith", he was a permanent member of the Love Boat series, which was also broadcast in Germany . He has also made guest appearances on series such as Quincy , Charlie's Angels , Fantasy Island and Cagney & Lacey .
In the 1980s, Grandy embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In the 1986 congressional election, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Iowa . There he took over from Berkley Bedell of the Democratic Party on January 3, 1987 . After several re-elections, he represented his district until its dissolution in 1993. In 1992, he was elected to succeed Jim Ross Lightfoot in the fifth district of Iowa in Congress . In 1994 he renounced another candidacy. Instead, he unsuccessfully applied for the office of governor of Iowa: In the primary of his party, he narrowly lost to incumbent Terry Branstad . During Grandy's time in the US House of Representatives, the 27th Amendment was discussed and passed there.
Fred Grandy was President and CEO of Goodwill Industries between 1995 and 2000 . He also became a political radio commentator. To this day he works in the radio and television business.
