Jeremiah Henry Murphy (born February 19, 1835 in Lowell , Massachusetts , † December 11, 1893 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1887 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1849, Jeremiah Murphy moved with his parents to Fond du Lac County , Wisconsin . Three years later the family settled in Iowa County , Iowa. Murphy first attended public schools in Boston and then Appleton University in Wisconsin. He then studied until 1857 at the University of Iowa in Iowa City . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1858, he began to work in his new profession in Marengo . In this place he was also elected to the municipal council in 1860.

Murphy was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1864 and 1868 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions . In 1867 he moved his residence and law firm to Davenport . In 1873 and 1878 he was mayor of this city. Murphy served in the Iowa Senate between 1874 and 1878 . In 1876 he ran for the first time unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives in Washington. In the 1882 congressional election, Murphy was elected to Congress in the second constituency of Iowa . There he took over on March 4, 1883, succeeding Republican Sewall S. Farwell , whom he had defeated in the elections. After re-election in 1884, he was able to complete two legislative terms in the House of Representatives until March 3, 1887. In 1886 he was no longer nominated by his party for another term.

After his tenure in Congress was over, Jeremiah Murphy retired from Washington. He died there in December 1893. He was buried in Davenport.
