Henry Johnson Brodhead Cummings (born May 21, 1831 in Newton , Sussex County , New Jersey , †  April 16, 1909 in Winterset , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1879 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Cummings attended the public schools in Muncy ( Pennsylvania ). In 1850 he published a newspaper in Schuylkill County . After studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1855. A year later he moved to Winterset, Iowa. There he was district attorney in Madison County from 1856 to 1858 . Between 1861 and 1864 he served as an officer in the Union Army during the Civil War . He made it to the colonel. After his military service he became the owner and editor of the newspaper "Winterset Madisonian".

Cummings was a member of the Republican Party . In 1876 he was elected as their candidate in the sixth constituency of Iowa in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded John A. Kasson on March 4, 1877 . Since he lost to Edward H. Gillette of the Greenback Party in the following elections in 1878 , he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1879 . During this time, the reconstruction in the southern states was completed.

In the years that followed, Henry Cummings did not appear politically. He died on April 16, 1909 in his home town of Winterset and was buried there.
