George D. Perkins

George Douglas Perkins (born February 29, 1840 in Holley , Orleans County , New York , † February 3, 1914 in Sioux City , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1899 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Perkins attended public schools in his home country. He later moved to Baraboo , Wisconsin , where he completed an apprenticeship in printing. In 1860 he moved to Cedar Falls , Iowa, where he published the Gazette until 1866. Between August 1862 and January 1863 he was a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War . From 1866 to 1869 Perkins worked in Chicago for the Northwestern Associated Press . From 1869 he lived in Sioux City, where he also published a newspaper.

Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1874 and 1876 he was a member of the Iowa Senate . He was the immigration officer for the State of Iowa in 1880 and 1882. He then served as US Marshal for northern Iowa from 1883 to 1885 . In 1876, 1880, 1888, 1908 and 1912 Perkins was a delegate to the respective Republican National Conventions .

In 1890, Perkins was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 10th constituency of Iowa . There he took over from Isaac S. Struble on March 4, 1891 . After three re-elections he was able to complete four consecutive terms in Congress by March 3, 1899 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . At that time, the Philippines and the former Kingdom of Hawaii came under American administration.

In 1898, Perkins was no longer nominated by his party for another legislative term. Then he returned to his journalistic duties by continuing to publish a newspaper in Sioux City. George Perkins died on February 3, 1914 and was buried in Sioux City.
