Gilbert N. Haugen

Gilbert Nelson Haugen (born April 21, 1859 in Orfordville , Rock County , Wisconsin , †  July 18, 1933 in Northwood , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1899 and 1933 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Gilbert Haugen attended the public schools in his home country. In 1873 he moved to Decorah in Winneshiek County , Iowa. There he first worked in agriculture. At the same time he attended the local Breckenridge College . He later graduated from Commercial College in Janesville, Wisconsin. In the following years Haugen participated in many businesses, primarily in the real estate and banking sectors. In 1886 he moved to Northwood, where he also worked in banking.

Haugen was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1887 and 1893 he served as a treasurer in Worth County . In 1890 he founded the Northwood Banking Co. of which he became president. From 1894 to 1898, Haugen was a member of the Iowa House of Representatives . In 1898, Haugen was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Iowa , where he succeeded Thomas Updegraff on March 4, 1899 . After 16 re-elections, he was able to complete 17 legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1933 . From 1907 to 1909 he headed the Ministry of Interior's expenditure control committee; between 1919 and 1931 he was chairman of the Agriculture Committee. He was instrumental in the McNary Haugen Farm Act passed in 1927 . During his time in Congress, the First World War and the passage of six constitutional amendments , which were discussed and passed in Congress between 1913 and 1933, took place. It was about the introduction of the nationwide income tax, the direct election of US senators , the alcohol ban and later the lifting of the ban, women's suffrage and the revision of the legislative periods of the President and Congress.

In the 1932 congressional elections, Haugen fell victim to the then nationwide trend in favor of the Democratic Party : he was defeated by Fred Biermann . Gilbert Haugen died a few months after leaving Congress on July 18, 1933 in Northwood.
