The name of the city goes back to Waukon Decorah (around 1780-1868), a leader of the Indian tribe of the Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) during the time of the Black Hawk War .

The first whites settled in the area of ​​today's city in 1849. In the following years, more Norwegian immigrants came to the emerging settlement.

In 1857 Decorah was incorporated as a separate municipality.
