history

The village was founded in 1860, mostly by Bohemian, German and Swiss immigrants. The place was originally called Spielville, named after the founder Joseph Spielmann. The Roman Catholic St. Wenceslas Church was also built in 1860 and is the oldest Czech Catholic church in the United States.

The place became famous through the composer Antonín Dvořák , who spent the summer of 1893 here. In Spillville he composed his string quartet in F major, Op. 96, the "American". The Bily Clocks Museum, which has a collection of lavishly designed clocks from two brothers from Spillville, is also very popular with tourists. In 1893 Dvořák lived in that house.

Spillville is also home to the famous Inwood Ballroom, built in 1920 and home to numerous popular 20th century musicians including Louis Armstrong , Glenn Miller , Guy Lombardo and The Byrds .
