The Winneshiek County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Iowa . In 2010 , the county had 21,056 residents and a population density of 11.8 people per square kilometer. By 2013 the population had decreased to 20,994. The county seat is Decorah , named after a chief of the Ho Chunk Indians.
geography
The county is located in northeast Iowa and borders Minnesota to the north ; 40 km to the east, the Mississippi forms the border with Wisconsin . Winneshiek County covers an area of 1786 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water.
The Upper Iowa River , a right tributary of the Mississippi, flows through the north of the county in a west-east direction. The southwest is traversed by the Turkey River , which also flows into the Mississippi southeast of the county.
