history
Grundy County was formed on January 15, 1851 from former parts of Black Hawk County and was self-administered from 1856. It was named after Felix Grundy (1775-1840), a former US Senator from Tennessee (1829-1838) and Attorney General under President James K. Polk (1838-1840).
The first courthouse was built in 1861. It was a two-story wooden building with a courtroom, which was also used for other purposes, a room for the sheriff, the tax officer, the judge and a consultation room for the jury. The foundation stone for the second courthouse was laid on November 11, 1891.
In the 19th century Iowa in general and Grundy County in particular were the target of East Frisian emigrants, especially from the Krummhörn . Since 2011 there has been a partnership between Grundy Center and the municipality of Krummhörn.
Two buildings in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places .
