The Wayne County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Iowa . In 2010 , the county had 6,443 people and a population density of 4.7 people per square kilometer. By 2013 the population decreased slightly to 6402. The administrative seat ( county seat ) is Corydon .
geography
The county is located in the extreme south of Iowa, bordering Missouri, and has an area of 1,365 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It borders on the following neighboring counties:

history
Wayne County was formed in 1846. It was named after Anthony Wayne (1745–1796), a general in the American War of Independence .
In 1851 its own administration was established. Corydon, initially called Springfield , was designated as the county seat. This makes Wayne County one of the few counties in Iowa that have never changed county seats.

A hastily erected log house served as the first court and administrative building until a new building was erected for it in 1856. In 1871 it became too small and the county administration moved to different buildings in Corydon. This situation was only ended in 1891 when a newly built brick building was moved into.
In 1962 it was decided to construct a new building, which was completed in 1964.

According to the 2010 census , Wayne County had 6,443 people in 2,742 households. The population density was 4.7 people per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.32 people lived in each of the 2,742 households.
The racial the population was composed of 98.0 percent white, 0.3 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.7 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.1 percent of the population.
23.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 54.5 percent were between 18 and 64 and 22.1 percent were 65 years or older. 51.3 percent of the population was female.
The median income for a household was 35,425 USD . The per capita income was $ 18,795. 12.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
