The Monroe County is a county in the US state of Iowa . At the 2010 census , the county had 7,970 people and a population density of 7.1 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Albia .

The county is located in southeast Iowa, about 25 miles south of Missouri , and covers an area of 1,124 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. It borders on the following neighboring counties:

history
Monroe County was formed on February 17, 1843 from former parts of Wapello County. It was named after James Monroe (1758-1831), the fifth President of the United States (1817-1825).
