Woodbury County is located in the center of the Sioux City Metropolitan Area , which stretches from Iowa to the neighboring states of South Dakota and Nebraska .

Woodbury County was originally formed as Wahkaw County on January 15, 1851. In 1853 the county was renamed in honor of Levi Woodbury (1789-1851), a US Senator , Secretary of the Navy and Treasury, and Governor of New Hampshire .

In 1851, Thompsonville, which no longer exists, was the first administrative center. Two years later, the seat of administration was moved to Sergeant Bluff . County government offices were still set up in officials' private homes. In 1856 it was decided to move the county seat to the newly created city of Sioux City in 1854. In 1858 a new three-story brick building for the court and administration was moved into.

In 1914 it was decided to build what is now the Woodbury County Courthouse , which was completed in 1918. After a major overhaul of the building, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

According to the 2010 census , Woodbury County had 102,172 people in 38,739 households. The population density was 45.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.52 people lived in each of the 38,739 households.

The racial the population was composed of 83.6 percent white, 2.4 percent African American, 2.2 percent Native American, 2.4 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 3.2 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 13.7 percent of the population.

26.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 60.6 percent were between 18 and 64 and 12.8 percent were 65 years or older. 50.7 percent of the population was female.
