The Treasury Department building in Washington

The Ministry of Finance of the United States of America (amtl. United States Department of the Treasury ) is part of the Federal Government of the State responsible for the collection, management and distribution of public revenues. It was established on September 2, 1789 by resolution of Congress . The Department is based in Washington, DC. The building is depicted on the back of the $ 10 bill, the front of which features the image of the first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton .

Organization and agendas

The Ministry of Finance is headed by the Secretary of the Treasury , whose office corresponds to the German Finance Minister , the Deputy Secretary of the Treasury as his deputy and the Treasurer of the United States . It is divided into twelve departments ( bureaus ) that take on all fiscal policy tasks. These tasks include tax , customs , currency and economic policy , money production and the supervision of compliance with the law.

The Treasury Secretary is the chief economic adviser to the president and responsible for national and international financial and tax policies in the United States. He oversees the finances of the United States federal government and the tax authorities. Coin minting is his main area of expertise today. The signature of the treasurer, like that of the finance minister, must appear on every valid US dollar banknote .

After the Ministry of Homeland Security was formed in 2003, some departments of the Treasury were moved to other ministries, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), the Customs Service, and the Secret Service . The Minister of Finance is a member of the Cabinet and since the presidency of Bill Clinton member of the National Security Council . The finance minister is the fifth most important to the president .

The first US Treasury Secretary was Alexander Hamilton . The US Treasurer's office has existed a little longer than the Treasury itself. It has existed since 1775.

The ministry includes:
