Robert M. Kimmitt

Robert Michael Kimmitt (born December 19, 1947 in Logan , Utah ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ) and diplomat . He was US Ambassador to Germany from 1991 to 1993 and Deputy Treasury Secretary under US President George W. Bush from 2005 to 2009 .

biography

education

Bob Kimmitt attended Bishop Denis J. O'Connell High School until 1965. He then graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point (graduated in 1969 with honors). He received his Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University in 1977 .

military service

From April 1970 to August 1971, Kimmitt fought in the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam, for which he was awarded three Bronze Stars , the Purple Heart , the Air Medal and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry . In November 2004 he was retired as Major General of the Reserve.

Public offices and careers in the private sector

Kimmitt was a member of the NSC from 1976 to 1977 and 1978 to 1983 , interrupted by his work as a research associate for Federal Judge Edward Allen Tamm at the District of Columbia Federal Court of Appeals . In 1983, Kimmitt became general secretary and legal advisor to the National Security Council; In 1987 he moved to the US Treasury Department as a legal counsel. He temporarily left the civil service and worked as a partner in the law firm Sidley Austin . 1989 returned Kimmitt in the civil service back as Secretary of State for Political Affairs ( Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs ) in the US State Department . From 1991 to 1993, Kimmitt served as the United States Ambassador to Germany. Kimmitt then became a managing director at Lehman Brothers . In 1997 he joined the law firm Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP as a partner , for which he still works today. Robert Kimmitt is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations .

family

Kimmitt's father, Joseph Stanley Kimmitt , died in 2004, was Secretary of the US Senate and Colonel in the Army. His brother, Mark Kimmitt, was a Brigadier General in the US Army , serving as Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Middle East . Bob Kimmitt and his wife, Holly Sutherland Kimmitt, live in Arlington County ; they have two daughters and three sons.
