The United States Deputy Secretary of the Treasury ( Deputy Minister of Finance of the United States ) is the second highest post in the Treasury of the United States . The owner is the deputy of the respective finance minister.

The Deputy Secretary advises and assists the Treasury Secretary in running the Department of the Treasury and in overseeing its activities. He represents the minister if he is unable to exercise his office for health or other reasons. The incumbent has an important role in drafting and executing Treasury policies and programs. He is also the only official besides the Minister of Finance who can issue a Treasury Order , a document that usually only he or the Minister can delegate powers to other employees of the agency.

The post of Deputy Secretary , established under President Ronald Reagan in 1981 , succeeded that of the Under Secretary of the Treasury , who had previously been Deputy Minister. Dean Acheson , Oliver Max Gardner and Daniel W. Bell held this office . Today there are three Under Secretaries , each responsible for subject-related departments and reporting to the Deputy Secretary .

The position of Deputy Secretary is currently vacant. Banker Jim Donovan , nominated by President Donald Trump in March 2017, waived his appointment in May of that year. The post is temporarily held by Sigal Mandelker , Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence .
