David Hale

David Hale Maclain (* 1961 in Bridgewater Township , Somerset County , New Jersey ) is an American diplomat (Career Ambassador) and reigning United States Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs (Secretary of State for Political Affairs). He was appointed to this post by President Donald Trump on August 30, 2018. Hale was one of several government officials heard at public hearings as part of the House Intelligence Committee's impeachment investigation against President Donald Trump.

Life / career

David Hale was born in 1961 to John Martin Hale and his wife Majorie Kler in Bridgewater Township, New Jersey. After his parents' divorce in 1974, David Hale grew up with his maternal grandparents - Joseph H. Kler (1903-1983) and Elizabeth VanHoesen (Vaughan). The grandfather, Joseph H. Kler, worked as an ophthalmologist in New Brunswick , New Jersey for more than half a century . He was a senior physician at Rutgers University , worked at Middelsex General Hospital (now: Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital - RWJUH), and was Chief Ophthalmologist and ENT Consultant at St. Peter's Medical Center, New Brunswick, New Jersey for 30 years .

In addition, his grandparents traveled the world and David Hale heard many stories from them about exotic places, which sparked his interest in the External Action Service:

"My call to public service began with my grandparents, Joseph and Elizabeth Kler. They were world travelers who always returned from abroad with stories, books, and pictures of a world beyond our shores. As a young man, I gained a growing realization that what happened overseas mattered a great deal to our country's security and prosperity. I came to realize that a career in the Foreign Service would allow me to protect and advance our interests abroad. That was the beginning of my path from Bridgewater, NJ to Beirut, and beyond. "

After attending Bridgewater-Raritan High School (see wiki), he studied at the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University (with Madeleine Albright and Armin H. Meyer, among others ) and graduated here in 1983.

In 1984 he joined the US States Foreign Service. Its uses have included the legations in Tunisia , Bahrain , Saudi Arabia and the United Nations . In Washington, Hale served as deputy. Head of Department for Israel , Egypt and the Levant and Director for Israel-Palestine Affairs. His staff positions include assistant to Secretary of State Albright.

David Hale has received numerous awards, including a 2012 Presidential Rank Award of Meritorious Service (see Presidential Rank Awards - wiki). In 2013, then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton presented him with the Secretary's Distinguished Service Award (see Wiki).
