New Brunswick (in German: Neubraunschweig ) is a city in Middlesex County , New Jersey , USA . In the 2010 census , a population of 55,181 was registered.
Rutgers University is in the city . It is also the headquarters of the large consumer goods manufacturer Johnson & Johnson .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 14.9 km 2 , of which 13.5 km 2 is land and 1.3 km 2 (9.04%) is water. The city lies on the Raritan River .
Demographics
As of the 2000 census, there are 48,573 people, 13,057 households and 7,207 families in the city. The population density is 3,585.9 inhabitants per km 2 . 48.79% of the population are White , 23.03% African American , 0.46% Native American , 5.32% Asian , 0.08% Pacific Islander , 18.08% Other Ethnicity, and 4.24% Mixed Race. 39.01% are Latinos of any race .
Of the 13,057 households, 29.1% have children under the age of 18. 29.6% of them are married couples living together, 18.0% are single mothers, 44.8% are not families, 24.3% consist of single households and 8.4% are people over 65. The average household size is 3 , 23, the average family size 3.69.
20.1% of the population are under 18 years old, 34.0% between 18 and 24, 28.1% between 25 and 44, 11.3% between 45 and 64, 6.5% older than 65. The average age is 24 years. The ratio of women to men is 100: 98.4, for people older than 18 the ratio is 100: 96.8.
The median household income is 36,080 US dollars , and the median income for a family 38,222 dollars. Males have a median income of $ 25,657 and females $ 23,604. history
Originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape indigenous people, Brunswick was founded in the 17th century by early European immigrants; the place is named after the Low German name of the city of Braunschweig .
With its central location between New York City and Philadelphia and its location on the Raritan River , Brunswick quickly became an important hub for travelers and traders. The Raritan and Delaware Canal was a navigable canal connection with Bordentown on the Delaware River from 1834 to 1932 .
