Jaheim
Jaheim Hoagland (born May 26, 1978 in New Brunswick , New Jersey) is an American R&B singer.
Life & Career
Jaheim Hoagland has had a turbulent ghetto youth in New Jersey. Since his father died very early, his mother had to raise him and his two younger brothers alone. Like so many others, he got on the wrong track as a teenager, joined a gang and ended up in prison at 16 for drug possession. Shortly after his release, his mother also died and he remained responsible as the elder of the family.
His grandfather had already sung with the Drifters and other groups in his day and Jaheim took the family talent and role model as an opportunity to pursue a singing career. He took part in various competitions, where he also won several times, and was finally able to get a record deal. Kay Gee from Naughty by Nature took him on and promoted him on his Divine Mill label .
His first single, Could It Be , was a huge hit in 2000. It reached number 2 in the R&B charts and also made it into the top 40 in the official charts. The album Ghetto Love then even made it into the top 10 of the Hot 200 and has since sold over 2 million times. Two other singles, Anything and Just in Case , were also able to build on the success of the debut single.
Almost a year later, the second album, Still Ghetto , followed, again a platinum album and as successful as its predecessor. With Fabulous and Put That Woman First it contained its R&B top 10 singles number 3 and 4 and the latter song was also his most successful solo single on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 20 .
In 2004 Jaheim had his biggest single success as a featuring artist on the song My Place des rapper Nelly . Together they had an international hit that reached No. 1 in Great Britain and the Top 10 in the USA, Switzerland and Germany, among others.
Some time passed before the third album in his ghetto trilogy. In the meantime, he had also had problems with the police when marijuana was found on him and his two fellow passengers during a traffic control and he resisted the subsequent arrest.
When Ghetto Classics was finally released in February 2006, it immediately topped the album charts . However, interest in the album quickly waned and overall it did not sell half as well as any of its predecessors. The two single releases could only be placed in the R&B charts and not in the Hot 100. Jaheim's fourth album, The Makings of a Man , was released at the end of 2007 and its success was roughly on par with Ghetto Classics . So far, the singer has made it into the top 3 of the R&B album charts with all four releases.
In April 2010, Jaheim was arrested for road traffic offenses and possession of marijuana .
