Nelly (born November 2, 1974 in Austin , Texas ; real name Cornell Iral Haynes Jr. ) is an American rapper , singer , actor and entrepreneur . He has been a member of the rap group St. Lunatics since 1993 and signed a recording deal with Universal Records in 1999 . With the albums Country Grammar , Nellyville , Sweat and Suit , Nelly became one of the most commercially successful rappers, receiving two Grammys , among other things .

biography

Cornell Haynes Junior was born to a US Air Force soldier . Shortly afterwards, the family had to move to Spain because his father was stationed there at a US air force base. After Haynes' third birthday, the family moved back to University City near St. Louis , Missouri , USA .

Haynes went through a difficult youth. He lived with different family members and had to change schools several times. At the time, Haynes said he was involved in numerous quarrels among teenagers on the streets of St. Louis. His mother (Rhonda Mack) moved to the suburbs of St. Louis with her son. It was there that his talent for baseball was discovered. However, he turned down offers to work as a professional baseball player and founded the rap group St. Lunatics with five friends .

Music career

Beginnings and first solo album

In 1996, the group recorded their first single, Gimme What Ya Got , which became very popular in the St. Louis area. Despite this success, the St. Lunatics did not get a contract with a record label. Haynes decided to continue working as a solo artist and was soon signed to Universal Records . In 2000, Haynes' debut album Country Grammar was released , which he published under the pseudonym Nelly. His debut single Country Grammar (Hot Shit) reached number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became Nelly's first top ten hit in the US. Due to the success of the single, the album debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Furthermore, EI , Ride wit Me and Batter Up were released as single. On April 27, 2004, the album was awarded platinum 9 times by the RIAA . Nelly sold over 10 million copies of the country grammar album, which meant his breakthrough as a rapper.

2001 Nelly took with the St. Lunatics on the album Free City , which contains the single Midwest Swing , this later appeared on the soundtrack album for the film Training Day . Nellyville

Nelly released his follow-up album Nellyville in 2002 , which debuted at number 1 on the album charts. The first single, Hot in Herre , was Nelly's first number one hit in the USA and was number one for seven consecutive weeks. The world hit Dilemma , a duet with Kelly Rowland from the girl group Destiny’s Child , was released as the second single and replaced Hot in Herre from the top and was even more successful than the first single and was at number 1 for a total of 10 weeks, making the song Nelly's second number one hit and also his final breakthrough internationally. In 2003 Nelly released his next album Da Derrty Versions: The Reinvention . It contains the hit single Iz U from the soundtrack to the Walt Disney film The Haunted Villa . Stepped On My J'z was released as the next single, produced by Jermaine Dupri. The song is a feat. with Dupri and Ciara . After that, Body on Me was released together with Akon and Ashanti and reached number 40 in the USA. Nelly also rapped on Rick Ross ' single Here I Am , with Avery Storm .

Nelly 5.0

In the summer of 2009 Nelly announced in Las Vegas that he wanted to release a new album, in October he named the summer 2010 as the release date. In April 2010, Nelly's cousin Michael Johnson was murdered in Missouri and Nelly postponed the publication. In May 2010, Nelly announced the title of the album, Nelly 5.0 . Nelly founded her own charity with the 4Sho4Kids Foundation . The Jes Us 4 Jackie organization started in March 2003 when Nelly's sister Jackie Donahue developed leukemia .
