In hip-hop culture , the term grill ( pl.grills or grillz ) is a piece of jewelry that is worn over the teeth. Grillz are often made from silver , gold, or platinum . They are often decorated with diamonds or engraved lettering. Grillz can cost anywhere from fifty to several thousand dollars, depending on the material and number of teeth. Grillz are part of the hip-hop bling-bling culture.

history

Lower front teeth 41, 42 , attached with gold wires , of an Egyptian mummy

The oldest "grillz" found were found during excavations in Giza and date back to the 16th century BC. BC back. However, it is unclear whether these were worn by the Egyptians in everyday life or were attached afterwards during the process of mummification . The Egyptian grillz were gold cords with which replacement teeth were attached in tooth gaps.

The first pieces of jewelry that were worn on the teeth go back to the Etruscans (in today's Italy). These developed around 700 BC. A technique of making metal pins that were wrapped around teeth. These pieces of jewelry were mainly worn for aesthetic reasons. It is uncertain whether the tooth jewelry was only worn by Etruscan women or whether men and slaves also wore them. The first complete gilding of the bit goes back to the 5th century BC. BC back. These early grillz were made as dentures by the Phoenicians (today's Lebanon).

The Mayan tooth jewelry was found in South America , the background of which was based on religious and aesthetic motifs. Round gemstones which were inserted into pre-drilled holes in the tooth were popular. Another method was to fill gaps in teeth with tooth-shaped gemstones. Various hip-hop artists started wearing grillz in the early 1980s. The New Yorker Eddie Plein with his Eddie's Gold Teeth is often blamed for the emergence of this trend in hip-hop culture. He was also the one who made Flavor Flav's first gold essays and later outfitted New York rappers Big Daddy Kane or Kool G Rap with Grillz. He later moved to Atlanta , where he designed even more elaborate grillz for rappers like Big Boi and André 3000 from OutKast , Goodie Mob , Ludacris and Lil Jon .

14-carat gold grillz

Grillz became a symbol of their success and wealth , especially among the Dirty South rappers who emerged in the 2000s . In 2005 rapper Nelly (together with Paul Wall , Big Gipp and Ali ) dedicated the song Grillz, which was released as a single, to tooth jewelery . This was parodied by KIZ in 2007 under the same title. Also published DJ Khaled 2015's hip-hop song "Gold Slug" with the artist Chris Brown , August Alsina and Fetty Wap . The term "golden slugs" is another name for grillz.

Grillz with precious stones

In the course of time, the tooth jewelry spread beyond the hip-hop scene. For example, the American swimmer Ryan Lochte wore ornate grillz, which depicted the flag of the United States of America, at the 2012 Olympic Games awards ceremony . A renewed appearance of the grillz is thanks , among other things, to the French jewelry designer Dolly Cohen . The trained dental technician supplies Rihanna , Cara Delevingne , A $ AP Rocky and the French rapper Booba with her creations and works with fashion companies such as Givenchy . Since 2015 there has been a German Grillz company, "Mein Zahnschmuck", and since 2020 another one called "Decadentz" which is located in Bavaria.

According to an entry in the Guinness Book of Records on February 1, 2018, singer Katy Perry is the owner of what is currently the most expensive grillz in the world. Your tooth jewelery, which is mixed with numerous precious stones, has a value of 1,000,000 US dollars (equivalent to around 907,200 euros ).

Manufacturing

While grillz couldn't be easily removed from teeth or conformed to the crown in the past , today they are made from custom dental shapes. In order to construct better grillz, a very complex manufacturing process is required. A dentist needs to take an impression of the front row of teeth. In order to achieve a tooth shape as closely as possible, the latex negative is filled with plaster of paris; the plaster of paris is used to adapt the grill to the unique tooth profile. Then you check it for hold and comfort on the teeth of the owner. However, a simpler process is used for an inexpensive variant of the grillz. Here the grill is filled with wax, which the owner then softens with hot water and which then adapts to the shape of the tooth. However, wearing such grillz can be more uncomfortable and unstable than those that have been professionally fitted.

Custom made golden grillz

Grillz can be made from gold between 10 and 24 carats . In addition to the sheen of the gold and its flexibility, this also affects the price of the piece of jewelry. The best-known models include the so-called "window design", tooth flaps , or a strip between the incisor . In addition, gemstones set in gold can be incorporated.

Dental impression

Dental health

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), no study to date has shown that wearing Grillz for long periods of time can cause damage to dental health. The ADA warns, however, that bacteria can easily settle under the grill , which can lead to diseases of the gums , cavities or even bone loss. Cheap products could also trigger metal allergies . In addition, schools in the US states of Alabama , Georgia and Texas have banned the wearing of grillz for health and disciplinary reasons.

Furthermore, wearing badly processed and incorrectly adjusted grillz can have health consequences for teeth and gums. In order to prevent possible damage, it is advisable to have the dental impression taken by a specialist.
