The American Dental Association (ADA) is the largest dental association in the United States and represents 157,000 dentists and 20,000 dental students (as of 2013). Every year the association organizes its annual congress with an exhibition accompanying the congress at different locations.

history

In 1859, 26 dentists in Niagara Falls , New York founded the first American Dental Association (ADA). In 1897, the ADA merged with the Southern Dental Association (SDA) to form the National Dental Association (NDA) . In 1922 it was renamed ADA again.

organization

The highest body of the ADA is the delegate assembly, which consists of 473 delegates. Delegates are sent by 53 regional societies, five state organizations, and the American Student Dental Association . The board of trustees, which consists of the president, two vice-presidents and a further 17 members, takes care of the operational business.

tasks

The association represents the interests of both dentists and patients. It issues opinions on ethical and technical issues that are recognized worldwide. The ADA formally recognizes 9 specialties: dentist in public health , endodontics , oral and maxillofacial pathology , oral and maxillofacial surgery , orthodontics , pediatric dentistry , periodontics , prosthetics and oral and maxillofacial radiology . Under the supervision of the United States Department of Education, it maintains the dentist admissions committee, which grants the professional license, and the continuing education committee, which awards the aforementioned professional titles. It is dedicated to prophylaxis and maintains its own website MouthHealthy for this purpose.

Annual congresses

  • The 153rd Annual Session took place from October 18-21 , 2012 at the Moscone North Convention Center in San Francisco . The accompanying exhibition “World Marketplace Exhibition” was held parallel to the congress in the exhibition halls of the Moscone Center.
  • The 154th Annual Session took place from October 31 to November 3, 2013 in New Orleans at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center .
  • The 155th Annual Session was held in San Antonio , Texas, October 9-14, 2014.
  • The 156th Annual session took place in Washington, DC from March 16-18. November 2015.

The next annual sessions will take place from 20-25. October 2016 in Denver , from 19.-24. October 2017 in Atlanta and from September 27 to October 2, 2018 in San Francisco .

ADA seal

Over 300 oral health products, including toothpastes, floss, toothbrushes, mouthwashes, adhesives and chewing gum, bear the ADA Seal of Acceptance , a seal of quality that is widely recognized by consumers for safety and effectiveness.

Dudley the dinosaur

Dudley the Dinosaur (designed by Jon McClenahan ) has been a mascot of the American Dental Association since 1991. Dudley aims to motivate children to brush their teeth in two languages ​​(English and Spanish).
