The Pierre Fauchard Academy is a volunteer-run, non-profit dental organization in 1936 by Elmer S. Best, a dentist from Minnesota was founded. The objective is independence from commercial interests in dental research and its publications. Elmer Best strove to raise professional standards . The academy is named after Pierre Fauchard (1678–1761), a French dentist who is considered the "father of modern dentistry". Fauchard wrote a book called Le Chirurgien dentiste, ou Traité des dents , the first modern dental textbook.

The Pierre Fauchard Academy's articles of association are built on the goals of Elmer Best and focus on the integrity and ethics of dentists. A primary goal at the time it was founded is to preserve the independence of scientific publications.
organization
The Pierre Fauchard Academy currently consists of more than 8,000 so-called Fellows who are organized in 120 sections. Of these, 55 are in the United States and 65 in countries in South America , Europe , Asia, and Australia . The members are dentists who are among the most outstanding personalities in the various fields of dentistry . Membership is only possible by invitation and must be approved by the section in which the dentist resides. The academy is administered by a board of trustees consisting of four board members and ten board members from around the world. Each section elects other board members in addition to the chairman. The Academy's offices are located in Logan , Utah , USA . Acting President is Michael W. Schafhauser. Section head for Germany is Samireh Nikolakakos, for Switzerland Roland A. Söllner and for Austria Rudolf Slavicek (as of 2016).
Historical processing
Part of the work of the academy is the historical preparation of dentistry. For this purpose, the résumés of the most important protagonists and researchers in dentistry are shown.
Honors
The Pierre Fauchard Academy maintains a “Hall of Fame of Dentistry”, into which the most important researchers in the field of dentistry are admitted. In addition, it presents awards annually, including the Fauchard Gold Medal Award, the Elmer S. Best Award, the Presidential Award of Excellence, awards for special merits and honorary memberships.
Elmer S. Best Award
Introduced in 1962, this award is only given to deserving dentists residing outside the United States.

Publications
The Academy publishes the journals Dental World and Dental Abstracts every two months .
Foundation, endowment
