The Council of European Dentists ( CED , German  Council of European Dentists ) is the professional representation of the dental profession in the European Union (EU).

tasks

As a not-for-profit institution, the CED represents dental interests at EU level and advises the European institutions on all matters affecting the dental profession. It emerged from the Dentist Liaison Committee (DLC), which was founded in 1961. Political work focuses on high standards of oral health and dental care . The 1965 Code of Ethics for Dentists in the European Union contains general principles that all dentists should follow in their professional work. The code was further developed in 1982, 1998, 2002 and 2007.

Priority in these principles are the interests of the patient, the commitment to the good of society and the professional practice of sound scientific knowledge and skills. The EU manual for the dental practice commissioned by the CED was first published in 1997 and updated in 2000, 2004, 2008, 2014 and 2015. Dentists must stay up to date throughout their professional life and follow the professional rules in all EU countries.

The CED works with the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS, German  Scientific Committee for Consumer Safety ), the Scientific Committee on Health and Environmental Risks (SCHER, German  Scientific Committee for Health and Environmental Risks ) and the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR, German  Scientific Committee for Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks ). In addition, there is an ongoing dialogue with Members of the European Parliament . The MPs receive specific proposals for amendments to laws.

Members

The CED is made up of 33 national dental associations and dental chambers from 31 European countries. The CED consists of 29 full members from EU member states. The national dental associations from Iceland, Norway and Switzerland have observer status. The Romanian Dental Association also has observer status, but is a candidate for membership in the CED. The associations together represent 340,000 European dentists.

Working groups

There are currently the following working groups:

  • Education and qualifications
  • E-health
  • Patient safety and infection control
  • Dental materials and devices

Other European organizations

The Chief Dental Officers are officers or officials who advise national governments in Europe on oral health issues. The Council of European Chief Dental Officers currently has delegates from almost all EU countries (including those countries seeking EU membership) and EEA countries, as well as from some countries outside the EU / EEA. The Council of European Chief Dental Officers was founded in July 1992 and registered in 1995 as a Dutch association with the Kamer van Koophandel in The Hague.
