The FDI World Dental Federation is the world association of dentists based in Geneva , Switzerland .

history

The FDI was founded in 1900 as the Fédération Dentaire Internationale by Charles Godon from the Ecole Dentaire de Paris and five other dentists in Paris , Florestan Aguilar from Madrid, Spain, George Cunningham from Cambridge, England, Elof Förberg from Stockholm, Sweden, AW Harlan from Chicago, Illinois, USA and E. Sauvez from Paris, France. These men were elected to the first board along with Drs. L. Grevers (Holland), F. Hesse (Germany) and Pichler (Austria). The FDI is one of the oldest international professional associations in the world.

The FDI currently has more than 200 national member associations in nearly 130 countries, which together represent over 1 million dentists. President of the company is Gerhard Seeberger ( Italy ) (as of 2019).

Delegates of the member organizations elect the FDI council, which is responsible for administration, in a general assembly.

Five standing committees are responsible for communication and member support, dental practice, education and science, and oral health development and health promotion.

The FDI maintains official relationships with the United Nations (UN) and the World Health Organization (WHO), whose goal of promoting dental health worldwide it supports.

In addition to the World Association of Nurses, the International Pharmaceutical Federation and the World Medical Association , it is a member of the World Health Professions Alliance .

Goals of the FDI

The FDI has the vision to lead the world to optimal oral health and has therefore set itself the following tasks:

  • To be the global, authoritative and independent spokesperson for dentistry
  • To promote the interests of the member associations and their members
  • To support optimal oral and general health for all people
  • The ethics of promoting, art, science and practice of dentistry and support
  • To raise awareness among political leaders that there is a direct link between oral health and overall physical health
  • To promote the education of the population in underprivileged countries in the field of oral hygiene and oral health with the help of adapted strategies and the development of private and public partnerships
  • Reduce differences in the level and quality of oral health by implementing effective oral health promotion measures

The FDI develops and disseminates policy positions, standards and information on all aspects of oral health worldwide. FDI statements reflect the current state of knowledge and understanding on a wide range of topics related to oral health, oral health policy and the dental profession.

The FDI provides a network of members, partners and public health representatives and works in cooperation with the WHO on the publication of scientific and educational reference documents.

FDI Annual World Dental Congress

The FDI Annual World Dental Congress (FDI AWDC) provides a scientific program, exhibition and international forum for presentations and discussion of advances in oral health, oral health care and anything else that further the goals of the FDI. There are opportunities to strengthen relationships between dental organizations, individuals, peoples and countries around the world.

The structure of the annual World Dental Congress may vary in detail depending on local conditions, but the main elements of the congress are:

World Oral Health Day

World Oral Health Day (WOHD) is celebrated on March 20th each year. It goes back to a resolution of the General Assembly of the FDI in 2007 at the World Dental Congress in Dubai. Originally, September 12th was scheduled for the birthday of the FDI's founding father, Charles Godon. The date was later moved to March 20th for practical reasons. In 2013 the day was celebrated in 38 countries. In Germany, Dental Health Day is celebrated on September 25th .
