Medical Association

In Germany there are various medical and dental associations , including both legal entities under private law and public law. The two main umbrella organizations of doctors, the German Medical Association (Association of German Medical Associations), the umbrella organization of medical self-government in the regional medical associations with 485,800 members (of which 371,302 practicing physicians) (as of December 31, 2015), and the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) in which all contract doctors in Germany are members via the regional associations of statutory health insurance physicians, and which acts as a body of medical self-administration as a professional body under public law (K. d. ö. R.). A total of around 164,947 (as of December 31, 2014) resident doctors and psychotherapists are members of the 17 associations of statutory health insurance physicians .

The 62,684 German contract dentists (as of October 1, 2016) are members of the 17 Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists (KZV), also K. d. Ö. R. Their umbrella organization is the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists (KZBV). All 92,678 dentists (including 71,425 dentists; as of December 31, 2015) are compulsory members of the respective state dental associations , which are part of the Federal Dental Association (BZÄK), the working group of German Dental Associations. Medical advocacy groups

  • The Marburger Bund represents the interests of salaried and civil servants in Germany. The Marburger Bund represents the interests of doctors as a union vis-à-vis the mostly public collective bargaining partners (salaried doctors) or employers (civil servants).
  • The NAV-Virchow-Bund represents the interests of general practitioners in Germany.
  • The Hartmannbund is one of the largest German medical associations and represents the interests of doctors, dentists and medical students in Germany across specialist groups.
  • The Association of Democratic Doctors was founded in 1986 as an alternative to the purely professional advocacy of doctors and is committed to the commercialization of medicine.
