The German Society for Periodontology ( DG PARO ; formerly Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Paradentosen-Forschung (ARPA)) is a registered, non-profit association for the scientific promotion of medicine , especially dentistry, oral and maxillofacial medicine in the field of periodontology . DG PARO is an associated member of the German Society for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine .

tasks

The DGPARO promotes research in the field of periodontology, as well as the evaluation, dissemination and representation of related scientific findings. This includes continuing education and training in the field of periodontology and cooperation with scientific specialist societies, working groups and institutions at home and abroad.

history

On November 1, 1924, the dentists Oskar Weski (1879–1952), Hans Sachs and Robert Neumann (1882–1958) founded the Working Group for Paradentosis Research (ARPA). In 1932, ARPA Internationale was founded in Zurich, the periodontal working groups from Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia and Finland.

During the time of National Socialism (1933–1945), the exclusion from university teaching, professional bans and the deprivation of rights of all Jews up to their physical annihilation by the National Socialist dictatorship took place. Internationally renowned periodontal experts of the Jewish faith such as Bernhard Gottlieb (1885–1950), Balint Orbán (1899–1960), Alfred Kantorowicz , Isador Hirschfeld (1881–1965) and the ARPA founding member Oskar Weski had to flee the German Reich before persecution . In 1945 the ARPA - like all German national socialist organizations - was dissolved by order of the victorious powers , but was re-established in 1949. In 1950, the ARPA was the first German dental specialist society to join an international association, the ARPA Internationale, after the Second World War .

Due to the lack of consensus on the further goals, the ARPA was dissolved in 1971 and the German Society for Periodontology (DGP, later DG PARO) was founded as the successor organization.

In 2003 the ARPA Science Foundation was established.
