structure
According to its own information, the association has over 19,000 members (as of 2019), with a total of 95,189 dentists (as of 2018). At the beginning of the 1970s, around a third of all dentists in Germany were still organized in the FVDZ. The number has now dropped to a fifth. The professional association is organized in state associations, district and district groups. The general assembly forms the administrative body of the association. It consists of the delegates from the regional associations and meets at least once a year. The federal executive committee is elected every two years from among the delegates. The federal board consists of the state chairmen and the executive board, which is composed of the federal chairman and two deputies. The Federal Chairman has been Harald Schrader since October 10, 2015.
activities
As a professional association, the FVDZ represents the professional interests of the dental profession. In addition, the FVDZ offers, among other things, congresses, seminars and legal advice. The youth work includes offers for students, young professionals and newly settled people. The Free Association issues numerous specialist publications, including the monthly association magazine Der Freie Zahnarzt .
The student parliament (StuPa) of the FVDZ consists of students of dentistry who volunteer in the Free Association of German Dentists. The main function of the parliamentarians is to allow a student opinion to flow into the work of the Free Association and thus of the federal board. The FVDZ thus also has contacts at the universities.
history
The association emerged from the Notgemeinschaft Deutscher Zahnärzte founded by Wolfgang Mzyk in 1955 , and the FVDZ has had its current name since 1957.
Dentistry and dentists under National Socialism
As part of the joint research project "Dentistry and Dentists under National Socialism" by the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists (KZBV), the Federal Dental Association (BZÄK) and the German Society for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine (DGZMK) in cooperation with the Institute for History, Theory and Ethics of Medicine at RWTH Aachen University and Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, the role of dentistry in the Nazi regime has been systematically processed since September 2016. The results were presented to the public on November 28, 2019.
