history

In 1990 Klaus-Peter Wefers, then senior physician at the Polyclinic for Dental Prosthetics in Giessen, initiated the establishment of the Gerostomatology Working Group. V. (AKG) as a non-profit association. From an assembly of 30 representatives from universities, dentists' associations, initiative groups and municipal health authorities, the founding contract signed: Egon Banger, Karl-Wilhelm Helmus, Michael Höcker, Rolf Hüttemann, Wolfgang Ischebeck, Eveline Meyer, Ekkard Mizgalski, Ina Nitschke, Horst Pantke, Gottfried Pellengahr , Ivo Pfütz, Helmut Stark and Klaus-Peter Wefers.

Klaus-Peter Wefers (1st chairman), Eveline Meyer (2nd chairwoman), Ina Nitschke (treasurer) and Egon Banger (secretary) were elected as the founding board. In the following years project and regional groups were formed and close cooperation with thematically related bodies and associations developed. Internationally, the AKG was recognized by the European College of Gerodontology (ECG) as a German “partner company”.

Since 1996 the DGAZ has also been cooperating with the Federal Association of Senior Citizens' Organizations. V. (BAGSO). After Peter Huber, Ilse Weinfurtner has been the DGAZ's representative at BAGSO since 2017. The DGAZ is actively involved in the German Seniors' Day.

On September 11, 2000, the AKG made an association with the DGZMK. In 2002 the umbrella association of Gerontological and Geriatric Scientific Societies in Germany (dvgg) was founded with the participation of the AKG. This foundation arose from the desire to strengthen the interdisciplinary cooperation of experts in the field of aging research, to improve the dialogue with politics and to represent the concerns of older people more effectively in public. After the cooperation between the various disciplines had started, the association was no longer necessary, so this activity was ended.

Since 2006 the professional society has been called the German Society for Old Age Dental Medicine e. V. (DGAZ).
