The Dental Association of Frankfurt am Main von 1863 eV is an association of licensed dentists . The purpose of the association is to promote dental science in theory and practice on a national and international level. This is to be achieved through scientific lectures and regular meetings of the members. The association strives for the social cohesion of the members.

history

The first dental associations were founded between 1859 and 1863, in Berlin in 1847 the Association of Dentists in Berlin , in Hamburg in 1857 the Association of Dentists and in Dresden the Association of Saxon Dentists . These associations joined together in 1859 in the Central Association of German Dentists . The Central Association held a large conference each year, which took place in Berlin in 1859, in Hamburg in 1860, in Dresden in 1861 and in Vienna in 1862. Following the conference in Vienna, Frankfurt am Main was chosen as the venue for the 1863 annual conference. In January 1863 seven Frankfurt dentists formed a local committee for the conference of the Central Association. On July 18, 1863, the “Association of German Dentists in Frankfurt a. M. "

1863-1900

The aim of the association's activity at that time was "to raise the status of dentists in scientific, social and collegial relationships, as well as to promote research in the field of dental science and its application in practice".

At the ceremony in 1878, the later chairman Degener demonstrated how to put a rubber dam . In 1879 the name of the association changed. The Association of German Dentists in Frankfurt am Main became the Dental Association in Frankfurt am Main . In 1896 a lecture by the incumbent President Albrecht on the use of X-rays in dentistry caused a considerable stir. This is the very first communication about dental x-rays. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary in 1888, a then young colleague named Otto Walkhoff dedicated his recently published work Conservative Treatment of the Dental Pulp to the association.

1900-1945

In the advanced training events between 1902 and 1912, the speakers included dentists who became famous and pioneering in dentistry, such as B. Miller , Sachs, Walkhoff , Gustav Julius Parreidt , Witzel and others. The festive meetings that had taken place in the Goethe House since 1879 and in the Senckenbergianum in 1910 were moved to the Carolinum from 1911 onwards.

During the First World War , the dental care of soldiers with mouth and jaw injuries was in the foreground. In 1912, the Carolinum Foundation signed the contract to establish the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main as the 10th of 11 donors.

From 1924 to 1929 Otto Loos was chairman of the association. Through his international contacts, he was able to provide the association with first-hand scientific information and restored the association to its former reputation. The club life with its scientific but also political orientation was ended in 1934 by the NSDAP decision to close all local clubs. In 1934, after 71 years, the entry in the register of associations of the city of Frankfurt am Main expired. From now on, advanced training was only offered at an academy set up by the regime.

Since 1945

After the Second World War , the association was reinstated in its old rights. The first scientific meeting took place on March 13, 1960. On the occasion of the general meeting on April 16, 1975, Friedrich Kreter was elected President. Kreter has shown a great deal of commitment in his functions as a university professor and department head at the Carolinum, as a state training officer for the State Dental Association of Hesse , an office he held for 20 years, and as the president of the dental association.

Giesbert Schulz-Freywald led the association until 2001. From 2001 to 2008 Rüdiger Schönfeld held the office of president. From 2008 to 2009 Paul Schmitt was president of the association. Robert Sader has been President of the Dental Association of Frankfurt am Main von 1863 eV since 2009. On November 8, 2013, the association celebrated its 150th anniversary with a ceremony in Frankfurt's Römer.

Club activities

Promotion of young scientists

In 2009, a new award was launched in cooperation with the Hessian Dental Association. In the exam semester of the Carolinum Frankfurt, it honors the graduates with the greatest social and collegial commitment. After a secret survey of fellow students, the prize is awarded by the two presidents during the exam ceremony.

The association awards the Friedrich Kreter PhD award annually. The prize is endowed with 1,500 € and honors the work with the highest information content for the practically active, resident dentist.
