history

Origins

The "Standards Committee" founded by the metallographer Nowack in 1926 and the "Frankfurter Arbeitskreis" founded almost simultaneously at the instigation of Fritsch and Thielemann as an amalgamation of scientists and dentists interested in materials can be seen as the forerunners of today's DGPro. From the latter, the "Working Group for Dental Material Science" emerged in 1933 through the expansion of the areas of interest.

In 1936, Schröder and Schoenbeck established the “Working Group for Prosthetics and Materials Science” in Berlin, which must be viewed as the direct forerunner of today's society. The Second World War put an end to these activities.

1951-1990

In order to meet the dentists' growing need for information and the exchange of experiences after the war, the working group for prosthetics and materials science was reconstituted on January 17, 1951 in Frankfurt / Main. The initiators were Professors Falck, Fehr, Fritsch, Kantorowicz and Korkhaus as well as Doctors Köhler, Reichel, Selbach, Thielemann and Uhlig. Rehm, Freiburg, was elected as the founding chairman. This association was later entered in the register of associations as the “German Society for Dental Prosthetics and Materials Science”.

Due to the division of Germany, prosthetists in the east inevitably became independent and in 1966 the working group was founded, since 1968 the "Society for Prosthetic Stomatology of the GDR" (GPST for short) with Taege as a board member. Ways were also found among the board members of Lenz, Musil and Weiskopf not to let the contact and exchange with colleagues from West Germany and the DGZPW tear off. The symposia at Reinhardsbrunn Palace were of particular importance in this context .

Since 1990

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, this was ultimately the basis for a friendly rapprochement between the professional societies that had existed in parallel for almost 25 years at the “dies academicus protheticus” in February 1990 in Berlin, which was held on October 24, 1990 under the chairmanship of Rossbach, Hanover , and from Schwanewede, Rostock, led to the merger of GPST and DGZPW. After the unification, the company was named "German Society for Dental Prosthetics and Materials Science".

At the annual general meeting on November 6th, 2009 in Munich it was decided that the professional society with the name “German Society for Prosthetic Dentistry and Biomaterials eV” (DGPro for short) will be continued.

activities

One of the company's central tasks is to organize an annual conference on current topics in the field. These are carried out at locations that change every year, sometimes in cooperation with scientific societies from other disciplines or regional societies and dental associations. While the annual conferences are more like a scientific assessment, the (autumn) symposia, which are reminiscent of the Reinhardsbrunn symposia, initially held in Gotha and today in Eisenach , serve to transfer knowledge from the university to practice, to encourage discussion among colleagues and to develop guidelines and guidelines. In 2015, the first S3 guideline on “all-ceramic crowns and bridges” was drawn up under the leadership of DGPro.

In cooperation with the Academy Practice and Science in the DGZMK, the DGPro organizes a curriculum for dental prosthetics, which serves the structured training of resident dentists and their assistant doctors. Since 2001 the company has established a structured, certifying advanced training program for "Specialists in Dental Prosthetics", which must be completed over three years at an authorized university clinic and which ends with an examination by a DGPro commission.

In cooperation with the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald , a master's degree in dental prosthetics was implemented over 18 course weekends over two and a half years, which ends with a thesis for a Master of Science.

For structured, certifying advanced training in the field of dental prosthetics, a curricular advanced training measure was set up by the DGPro in 2008.

The final report prepared by the DGPro in 2013 on the review of the standard care in accordance with Section 56, Paragraph 2, Clause 11 of Book V of the Social Code and further additional reports led to the recognition of single and double-wing adhesive bridges as age-independent standard care for the replacement of individual missing incisors in Germany from July 1, 2016.
