The Academy Practice and Science (APW) was founded in 1974 by the German Society for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine (DGZMK). Your task is to design and organize further training for members of the DGZMK. As their daughter, APW is fulfilling its mandate to bring current knowledge from the university into practice. True to the name, knowledge is also transferred from practice to the university. Although new structures for further education and training under the aspect of quality assurance have brought about a considerable change in the range of events at APW over the course of the 35 years of its existence, it still enjoys a high reputation in the dentistry as a mediator between science and practice.

Foundation phase

In October 1973, the President of the German Society for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine (DGZMK) Rudolf Naujoks declared at the general meeting that the board was working on establishing a training organization and commissioned a committee with the conceptual design. On April 24, 1974 (100th DGZMK annual meeting) the DGZMK officially announced the foundation of the “Academy Practice and Science” (APW), which as a subsidiary organization organizes the “targeted and systematic advanced training of the practical dentist on a scientific basis” should. A working group made up of the members Werner Hahn (Kiel), Horst Cochanski (Kiel), Ralf Mutschelknauss (Stuttgart), Alexander Gutowski (Schwäbisch Gmünd), Till Jung (Hanover), Werner Ketterl (Mainz), Karl Palmen (Cuxhaven), Ernst- Helmut Pruin (Bremen) and Günther Wunderling (Pyrmont) developed a qualifying, continuous training concept that should convey the current state of knowledge in dentistry, oral medicine and maxillofacial medicine. The first management of the APW was entrusted by the DGZMK board resolution of April 23, 1974, with Wunderling (lead), Cochanski, Hahn, Pruin and Manfred Strasbourg .

The first series of courses started on October 3, 1974. In a basic course program with initially ten weekend courses (later twelve) per specialist area, groups of 20 dentists each go through a training cycle over a period of two years - the "Curriculum General Dentistry" - which for many years becomes the successful and often copied first continuous training concept of the APW should. As early as 1975, DGZMK President Rudolf Naujoks was able to announce at the annual conference: “Energy was released that could be used to promote new or previously in the background specialist areas and tasks in our field. Here I am thinking of the advanced training system created by us and practiced with great success for a year at the Academy of Practice and Science, which is also being observed with great interest internationally as a possible model for modern advanced dental training ”. In 1976, the APW already had 304 permanent participants and 700 interested parties who, after completing the two-year series, were appointed to the first "members" of the Academy Practice and Science - in 1997 there were 2088 dentists who had completed the basic series and thus became members of the APW.

From the basic course to certification

Until 1998, the basic course with one course weekend for each department was the only series of courses offered by the APW. In follow-up courses (Continuum), the participants were able to supplement and deepen their knowledge. The first “APW day” as part of the annual meeting of the DGZMK was established in 1979 and had the theme “The face of the sick person”. 5 years later (1984) more than 600 participants attend this event. As a result of the scientific advancement in the various areas of dentistry, the call for subject-specific, specialized advanced training series increases from the mid-1990s. The APW is the first advanced training facility to show its profile and, in consultation with the specialist societies of the German Society for Implantology (DGI), starts the first implantology curriculum in 1988 . This is followed by specialized curricula in nine different specialist disciplines, the content of which is designed by the cooperating specialist societies and organized and carried out by the APW. In addition to the series in implantology, periodontology , prosthetics , restorative dentistry and endodontics , successful series are establishing themselves in children's dentistry , functional theory, aesthetic dentistry , psychosomatic medicine in dentistry and geriatric dentistry .

Since then, subject-specific curricula have been carried out in close consultation with the specialist societies in the DGZMK. And these in turn award the participants a certificate after successful completion, which represents a recognized qualification in the respective subject. The certificates of the professional associations are recognized by many state dental associations as the basis for a "focus of activity" in the respective field. To meet the ever-evolving dentistry, the related knowledge enhancement and quality assurance in dentistry, the APW individual courses does that like all training events to the guiding principles of the German Dental Association (BZÄK), the German Association for Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (DGZMK) and the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists (KZBV) are assessed with advanced training points. Evidence of at least 50 advanced training points per year is required in order to have an APW qualification or APW membership confirmed by a follow-up certificate after five years and a total of 250 advanced training points. Proof of 150 advanced training points after at least three years entitles the holder to receive the DGZMK advanced training seal.

Structure of the APW

The Academy Practice and Science is headed by an executive board of directors, which includes resident dentists and university lecturers , in order to anchor practice and science equally in the executive committee. According to the statutes, the chair is chaired by a resident dentist. His representative is elected from among the advisory board. The executive board of directors is supported by the advisory board (also known as the "large board of directors"), to which the representatives of the professional societies involved in the curricula belong.

Organizational implementation

The administrative office is responsible for the organizational implementation of the APW's advanced training courses. At the moment, employees at the Düsseldorf headquarters are responsible for classifying courses, scheduling, arranging speakers and handling the financial aspects of the courses and seminars.

The APW today

The new structures in advanced and advanced training and the requirements for quality assurance in dentistry present the APW with new tasks, which are also reflected in a changed advanced training offer. Specific changes in the practice of the profession due to current legislation and the shift in the direction of increasing feminization of the profession have e.g. Some of them have already found their way into new training content. There is a series for those returning to work (“update”) who are looking for a concentrated refreshment of knowledge in the major subject areas through baby break, stays abroad or other professional interruptions. With one-day events in the various regions of Germany, the APW offers a detailed discussion of controversial topics ("APW-controvers") or presents teaching programs and research content from the regional universities ("APW meets Uni"). The "APW select" conferences will be equipped with current specialist areas and particularly well-rated speakers. The APW is represented with its own page on the DGZMK online portal, "owidi-oral knowledge digital". This is how APW reacts to new requirements and changes in teaching and training. A concentration of knowledge, research and training is to be created online around the field of dentistry.
