Werner Ketterl

Werner Ketterl (born January 14, 1925 in Munich ; † December 23, 2010 ) was a German doctor , dentist and university professor .

In World War II Werner Ketterl served as an officer . He was a member of the NSDAP ( membership number 9.531.925), which he joined on April 20, 1943. From 1946 to 1953 he studied medicine ( dissertation : thymine and uracil , 1949) and dentistry (dissertation: the history of sinus surgery , 1957) in Munich. His habilitation also took place in Munich in 1960.

From 1949 to 1964 he was employed as an assistant and senior physician at the Munich University Hospital . In 1964 he became functional clinic director at the University of Mainz . On April 1, 1966, he followed the call to professor of dentistry at the medical faculty , where he succeeded Josef Kluczka . When he started his university teaching career, he benefited from the fact that the new dental, oral and maxillofacial clinic had just become ready for occupancy. From January 1, 1971 to December 31, 1972, he was dean of the medical faculty. In the newly designed "Department 10 - Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine" he taught from April 1, 1973 to September 30, 1979. From 1974 to 1977 he was Dean of the Dentistry Department. From 1974 to 1978 he was President of the German Society for Periodontology (DG PARO). From April 1, 1977 to October 6, 1981 he was President of the German Society for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine eV (DGZMK) and 1978/1979 Chairman of the Concilium Medicinale. From October 1, 1979 to September 30, 1993, his professorship was in "Faculty 04 - Medicine". During this period he was dean of the medical department from 1982 to 1984.

Werner Ketterl was a member of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International, as well as an honorary member of the Italian and Austrian Stomatological Societies and an honorary member of the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Merits

The Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the Mainz University Medical Center mourned the loss of a “[...] highly respected doctor, popular university professor and outstanding scientist.” The obituary also stated: “Werner Ketterl has been at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in 1964 made a decisive contribution to Mainz as a science location with the establishment and development of dentistry.
