The study of dentistry (actually: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery ) is a prerequisite for the exercise of the profession dentist . To qualify as a specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery , it is required in addition to studying medicine .

Places for studying dentistry are allocated through the Foundation for University Admission (SfH), formerly ZVS. In the years 1995 to 2005, the high school graduation average required for admission due to the numerus clausus was between 1.9 and 2.5. Due to the competitive situation in the 2013/14 winter semester, there were selection limits between 1.2 and 1.5 for the best Abitur according to the average grade of the federal state in which the Abitur was obtained (Landes-NC). With a waiting time of 13 semesters, all applicants could be admitted. With a waiting period of 12 semesters, an average grade of 3.3 was required.

From the perspective of the students, the degree in dentistry is one of the most expensive state university courses and costs up to € 13,500 for material alone, depending on the university.

License to practice medicine for dentists

The license to practice medicine for dentists regulates the degree and thus the dental training, the examination regulations and the other requirements for the granting of the license to practice as a dentist. § 1 According to this, the dental training comprises a ten-semester course in dentistry at a scientific university, which consists of a pre-clinical part of four semesters and a clinical part of six semesters. An examination semester follows. The standard period of study within the meaning of the University Framework Act, including the examination time for the "Dental Exam", is ten semesters and six months. The regulation was revised as the license to practice medicine for dentists on July 8, 2019 ( Federal Law Gazette I p. 933 ). The new version will come into force on October 1, 2020.

Preclinical

The pre-clinical studies include lectures and internships in physics, chemistry, biology, physiology, biochemistry / molecular biology, macroscopic and microscopic anatomy. Depending on the university, seminars are also offered in the individual subjects . In addition, all those who did not take the Latinum during their Abitur must take part in a course in medical terminology . Three dental technology courses are part of the pre-clinical section. The technical-propaedeutic course takes place in the first semester. The Phantom Course I usually takes place during the summer semester break between the third and fourth or fourth and fifth semesters. Phantom course II follows in the fifth semester.

Examination process

  • The practical test in dentistry lasts ten days. Both fixed and removable dentures must be incorporated into the patient. The scope of the examination differs between the individual universities, because at some of them the dental work has to be carried out by the examinees themselves.
  • In the subject of tooth preservation, the exam lasts five days. A root canal treatment has to be carried out, a partial crown has to be incorporated and several side and front tooth fillings have to be placed.
  • In the art surgery is provided to examine patient (including the collection of medical history ). This is followed by the diagnosis and its justification, therapy proposals and, if necessary, their implementation (e.g. tooth extraction or other minor surgical intervention).
  • The exam in orthodontics should extend over four days. In addition to the production of a simple regulatory device, a written report on an illness must be prepared. In an oral examination, knowledge of the development of jaw abnormalities as well as the ability to assess and treat them must be demonstrated.

Academic degree

In Germany the academic degree for a dentist is: Doctor medicinae dentariae , abbreviated: “ Dr. med. dent . ”At the beginning of the 20th century, this title was not permitted in Germany. The magazine Die Woche even reported a student strike in December 1913: “In Berlin, dentistry students stopped attending the lectures because the Ministry of Culture had introduced the title of Dr. med. dent. refuses. "

Approx. 50% (as of March 2000) of dentists have a doctorate . A majority of the older doctors completed their doctorates after their final exams, whereas a doctorate is becoming increasingly rare among the younger ones.

Income / salary

The average gross income of employed dentists in the public sector is between € 3,500 and € 4,500 per month.

According to the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists (KZBV), the average salary of independent dentists in Germany is around € 161,000 per year.

Studied dentistry in Switzerland

The Switzerland has the 2007 Bologna system introduced in which after the third year of the Bachelor of Dental Medicine (B Dent Med) acquired. In the following two years of the master’s program, a master’s thesis has to be written, and after passing the final exams, one receives the title Master of Dental Medicine (M Dent Med). For the federal final examination, the master’s degree is the admission requirement. After completing the master’s degree, the doctorate (Dr. med. Dent.) Can be obtained in a further year by submitting a doctoral thesis. Studies in Basel, Bern and Zurich are subject to a numerus clausus . Studied dentistry in Spain

The course regulations and the content of the course are set out in Directive 78/687 / CE drawn up by the Spanish Ministry of Health. The aim is to ensure basic dental care at the highest possible scientific level. This includes the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of dental diseases. These competencies are to be acquired at the dental faculties. The designation "dentist" is acquired in various modules. The course is a face-to-face course and lasts 10 semesters. 30 credit points are earned per semester and 60 points per academic year.
