Manfred Strasbourg

Manfred Strasbourg (born August 30, 1930 in Bremen ; † December 6, 2014 ) was a German dentist. He was a retired full professor for dentistry, oral and maxillofacial medicine at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf . One of his specialties was oral medicine with diseases of the oral mucous membrane.

Life

After graduating from high school in 1950 in his hometown, Strasbourg studied dentistry at the University of Göttingen , where he passed the state examination in 1954 and received his doctorate in the same year. From 1955 to 1959 he worked as a scheduled assistant at the Kieferklinik Bremen, where he was also trained in oral surgery. In 1959 he moved from Bremen to Saarland University , where he worked as a senior physician at the newly created clinic for dental, oral and maxillary diseases in Homburg , habilitated in dentistry, oral and maxillofacial medicine in 1962 and then went to the clinic provisionally headed. In 1963 he moved to Düsseldorf at the West German Kieferklinik of the Medical Academy at that time; here he was first senior physician in the polyclinic-surgical department, and later senior physician in the department for tooth preservation and periodontology. In 1967 he was appointed associate professor and in 1969 scientific department head and professor. In 1971, Strasbourg received calls for professorships for dentistry, oral medicine and maxillofacial medicine at the University of Frankfurt am Main , at RWTH Aachen University and at the University of Düsseldorf . He stayed in Düsseldorf and was appointed full professor in 1972 while at the same time being appointed director of the Polyclinic and Clinic for Dental, Oral and Jaw Diseases (West German Kieferklinik). In this function he headed the Polyclinic for Dental Surgery and Admission until his retirement in 1995.

Scientific publications / focuses

In numerous scientific publications in specialist journals at home and abroad as well as book chapters, Strasbourg has dealt with topics from various disciplines of dentistry, oral medicine and maxillofacial medicine (tooth preservation, periodontology, oral surgery). His primary clinical and scientific interest was in primary diseases of the oral mucosa and oral manifestations of systemic diseases. He was involved in the early detection of malignant changes in the oral cavity as well as in the preliminary diagnosis of acute leukemia in adulthood. The third edition of the work “Color Atlas and Textbook of Oral Mucosal Diseases”, written together with Prof. Knolle, who has since died, has been available in its third edition since 1991 and has been translated into several foreign languages. It is an international standard work.

  • 1991 to 2003 member of the advisory board of the interdisciplinary working group for dental anesthesia of the German Society for Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine and the German Society for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine
  • 1992 to 2006 board member of the German Diabetes Research Society
  • 2009 to 2014 board member of the Anna Wunderlich-Ernst Jühling-Foundation

Awards / honors

In addition to its membership in numerous national and international specialist societies, Strasbourg is an honorary member of several scientific institutions.

  • 1963 Miller Prize as the highest scientific award of the German Society for Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine for his basic research on the effects of tooth loss on the trigeminal ganglion (published as a monograph)
  • 1969 Best annual prize for the best scientific publication (together with Dr. Peters) on animal experiments to generate cleft palates
  • 1982 Medal of Honor from the University of Düsseldorf
  • 1986 Golden badge of honor from the German Society for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine
  • 1990 Gold pin of honor for the German dental profession
