  • 1881: The British passenger steamer RMS Teuton rams a reef at Danger Point on the coast of the South African Cape Colony and sinks while attempting to reach the port city of Simon's Town . Of the 272 passengers and crew, only 36 survive.
  • 1917: Because it is darkened due to the state of war, the French passenger steamer Natal collides with an oncoming cargo ship near Marseille and sinks within ten minutes. 105 of 503 passengers and crew members are killed.
  • 1965: A glacier crash of the Allalin glacier buries 88 workers employed in the construction of the Mattmarksee dam under ice masses.
  • 1974: In Zagreb, a train derails in a curve due to excessive speed. 153 people died in the railway disaster .
  • 1979: A major fire breaks out in the Oesterreichische Nationalbank in Vienna, which severely destroys its main building.
