Josef Pacher

Josef Pacher (born August 30, 1919 in Leitmeritz , Czechoslovakia ; † 2007 ) was a German forest scientist .

The forest historian and professor emeritus at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg has made a name for himself with research on forest bibliography and biography .

Live and act

Josef Pacher, born in Leitmeritz in 1919, spent his youth in Dresden . After graduating from high school in 1938, labor and military service followed. Pacher took part in the French campaign and in the war against the Soviet Union and became a prisoner of war . After he returned in 1946 to Dresden, he taught first two years at an elementary school before becoming a study of 1,948 forest sciences at the Faculty of Forestry Tharandt the Dresden Technical College could accommodate, which he successfully completed in 1952 with a degree in forestry. From 1953 he then worked at the German Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Berlin as a research assistant and managing director of the forestry section. Dissatisfied with developments in the GDR , he and his family fled to the West in 1961 - one day before the Wall was built . There he had to build a new existence for himself.

Pacher came to work as a research assistant at the Institute for Forest History at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg im Breisgau. Supported by the director of the institute, Kurt Mantel , he dealt intensively with the history of the forest, which was to become his life. 1964 Josef Pacher at the Natural Sciences and Mathematics Department with the work was investigation of the links between the forestry sector and the changes the state economy and the government's economic policy in the second half of the 18th century in Germany for Dr. rer. nat. PhD. In 1970 the habilitation followed , also in forest history.

In the following years, the forest historian dealt primarily with the biographies of important forest scientists and, together with Kurt Mantel, published the first volume of the series Forest Biography from the 14th Century to the Present in 1977 under the title Forest Personalities and Their Writings from the Middle Ages to the 19th Century . At the same time, an introduction to forest literary history is presented.

When the Institute for Forest History was dissolved in 1976 and the department for forest policy and spatial planning was added to the Forest Science Faculty in Freiburg, Pacher was appointed head of this department. At the same time he was appointed professor. In 1983 he retired.

Josef Pacher, who worked as a forestry professor for more than 20 years, lived in Freiburg after his retirement.
