Superiore anno
Superiore anno of Pope Leo XIII. is the second encyclical on the Rosary , it was published on August 30, 1884 and is subtitled "The Rosary and the Perseverance of Prayer".
On the meaning of the rosary
Referring to the encyclical Supremi apostolatus officio of September 1, 1883, the Pope recalls that at that time it was ordered to pray the Rosary with great devotion. Now he realized that this wish would be followed with great zeal and that this prayer would lead to the grace of God. Pope Leo XIII. states that the need for great piety and prayer continues. That is why this mode of prayer, which he calls the “Marian Rosary”, must be continued and the intensity must not be reduced. He also lists a few events in which the believing prayer and the strong will of the people could be brought to a benevolent end. For Italy and France he asks for special protection through the rosary prayers, since they are afflicted by an Asian plague and this “unclean plague ” should be kept from us.
The rosary month of October
With regard to the upcoming October, in which the Catholic world celebrates the Rosary, the instruction from last year continues to apply. The Pope decides and orders the continuation of the prayers of at least five decades of the Rosary . All indulgences awarded last year would be renewed. These indulgences would be given to all those who would pray the rosary on the designated days.
