In the encyclical Augustissimae virginis mariae (Sublime Virgin Mary) Pope Leo XIII describes. on August 12, 1897 the "Rosary Brotherhood and the Angels of Heaven".

The special position of the Blessed Mother Mary

The Pope assigns an important and divine place to the Mother of God, Mary, in the mystery of the Incarnation of Christ. As in his previous rosary cycles, he confirms Mary as the mediator to God and emphasizes the dogmatization of the " Immaculate Conception ". His conclusion from this leads to the demand that “we must follow the example of Christ ”.

The month of the rosary

Once again he underlines October as the month of the Rosary and calls on all Catholics to pray the rosary in all seriousness . The rosary is a special form of prayer and should aim to deepen piety, especially at the end of this century.

To the Rosary Brotherhood

Regarding the Rosary Brotherhoods , he explains that there are many useful reasons for Catholics to get involved in these organizations, as they create a feeling of togetherness and allow solidarity to grow. The aim should therefore be to establish such a brotherhood in every congregation . The Pope gives the brotherhoods, and especially the rosary brotherhoods, a pre-eminent place in society .

Prayer to the saints

In the rosary not only prayed to the Mother of God, but also thought of the “Trinity of God”. But so he says, the saints would also be implored to pray for us - with which he expressly emphasizes the holy angels . After all, it was the angels who announced the birth of the Son of God at the place of birth and, considered as a whole, belonged to the blessed family.

Papal exhortation

After underlining a special responsibility of the Pope and calling on the clergy to imitate, he declared in an exhortation that the Rosary Fraternities needed very special help and support. It is these men who develop fresh strength and spread the rosary, but it is also those who fight against the “evil of this world” with solidarity, hope and social responsibility.

Rosary cycles

In his rosary cycles Supremi apostolatus officio 1883, Superiore anno 1884, Octobri mense 1891, Magnae Dei matris 1892, Laetitiae sanctae 1893, Iucunda semper expectatione 1894 and Fidentem piumque animum 1896, Pope Leo XIII. the image of Mary and the veneration of Mary put in the foreground, in this encyclical he devoted great attention to the rosary brotherhoods.
