With his encyclical Fin dal principio of December 8, 1902 (on the formation of priests) Pope Leo XIII turns . to the clergy in Italy, the original version is in Italian.

In the encyclical he calls on the Italian clergy to renew and warns of harmful influences. He urges the formation of Christian priests and calls for sacred discipline.

Classical literature should be the main focus of priestly studies. It is also decreed that philosophy, theology and the same sciences should be included in the study regulations. The observance of the ordinances, the holding of seminars, and the spiritual silence that will lead to the right and God-commanded priesthood are required.
