Spectata fides

Spectata fides is the title of an encyclical from Pope Leo XIII. It was published on November 27, 1885 with the subtitle "On Christian Education ".

With this encyclical the Pope is mainly addressing the Archbishop of England and the other bishops in England . ( To Our Venerable Brethren, Henry Edward , Cardinal Priest of the Holy Roman Church, of the Title of SS. Andrew and Gregory on the Coelian Hill, Archbishop of Westminster, and the other Bishops of England. ) In his greeting, he emphasizes the “ proven or demonstrated loyalty ”( Spectatas fides ), which was communicated to him in a letter and deals with the contextual connection between Christian education and Christian life.

Leo XIII. emphasizes the schools as the most important place of activity for Catholic education and warns that this is not only a matter for the rich, but also a task for those "who are concerned with poverty with lean means and incomes" . He propagates Christian education as a task for all of society .

He continues to deal with religious education in England and complains about the lack of interest in religious education. Finally, in the final part, he calls on the bishops of England not to let up in their endeavors.
