In plurimis

With the encyclical In plurimis (In very many) Pope Leo XIII turned. on May 5, 1888 to the bishops of Brazil and wrote "about the abolition of slavery". He supported the efforts of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil, because although slavery had been outlawed in Brazil since 1853 , it was not officially abolished until 1888 with the "Golden Law" ( Lei Áurea ).

The Pope praised the abolition of slavery in Brazil and welcomed that the atrocities and atrocities against the people of Brazil had come to an end. He attested that the emperor had great foresight and called on the Brazilian clergy to actively support these efforts.

He lamented and regretted the suffering that slavery had brought on the people and called slavery a great sin . It is a sin against nature, race , human rights and peoples, which is one of the essential tasks of the church to protect. It is an act of charity to meet people of other races with brotherhood and love.

It is now an urgent task of the church to repair this damage and to actively support the abolition of slaves, he demanded. But it is also a merit of the efforts with which the Church pushed on to fight this evil. In a long line of popes it is proven that they always spoke out against slavery and oppression of people.

He also denounced the slave trade in other parts of the world, calling these shameless acts perverse. As an example, he cited Africa and especially Egypt , Ethiopia , Zanzibar and parts of Sudan , in which the kidnapping and selling of people were committed in horrific torture and injuries.

In the final exhortation he asked his confreres to promote the liberation of the oppressed and the abolition of slavery and to extend the freedom that had been won. In the final formula he asked and implored the help of the Blessed Mother Mary and sent the apostolic blessing to his venerable brothers.
