Dum multa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dum multa is the last of Pope Leo XIII. encyclical published on December 24, 1902 during his pontificate . He turned to the Archbishop of Quito and the Bishops of Ecuador and dealt with the "marriage legislation in Ecuador".

First, the Pope turned against the government in Ecuador (under Eloy Alfaro ), complaining that dioceses have been dissolved or reorganized without the consent of the Holy See . He also states that Christian marriages are hindered in various ways and that canon law is undermined. The Pope recalls his encyclical " Arcanum divinae sapientia " (1880), in which he set out the rules and laws for a Christian marriage. Leo XIII. praises the honor of Christian marriage and reminds of the inseparable permanence, which was sealed by God and strengthened in a sacrament .

By virtue of his apostolic office, the Pope condemns the marriage laws that were passed in Ecuador. He rejects any thought of divorce and condemns this liberal legislation. Finally, he calls on the bishops to whom he has written to fight back valiantly and to resist any temptation.
