Insignia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Insignes is an encyclical from Pope Leo XIII. which he published on May 1, 1896 and in which he dedicated himself to the "Millennium Celebration in Hungary".

Historical background

The Hungarians settled in the currently known from room 895/896 Hungary down. First they advanced in 895 into the middle and upper Tisza region in Greater Moravia . To the north and northwest of this area was the territory of the Neutra Principality (part of Greater Moravia), to the west of it the East Franconian duchies of Bavaria and Franconia , which stopped further expansion. The founding year 896 of today's Hungary prompted Pope Leo XIII to write this encyclical after he had already written in 1893 with the encyclical Constanti Hungarorum about the "Church in Hungary".

For the millennium

The Pope wrote to the bishops of Hungary expressing God's blessings and congratulations on this great event. He is now taking this millennium as an opportunity to address his words to the Hungarian nation . He praised the deeds and the fame of the nation and declared that it was important to him to recognize the legitimacy of civilized legislation in the established kingdom . The Hungarian people had already shown their loyalty , they had already shown testimony of faith and obedience, so he encouraged all Hungarians to continue their duties in this spirit.

Catholics and Hungarians

In his encyclical he named great personalities who had played a key role in building a Catholic Hungary:

Exhortation to Hungary

In the final exhortation he called on the Hungarian nation to continue to hold firm in the faith and to preserve the memory of those who had fought for the faith. He encouraged them to stand firm against the "evils in society " and to continue their journey true to faith. The apostolic duty would be to continue the unity of the church and he promised that as Pope he would give all assistance. With this exhortation he also linked the desire for two results: firstly, the connection to the House of Habsburg should not be broken and secondly the connection to the Holy See should continue to be maintained.
